How to Check Car Belts and Hoses for Wear

Belts and hoses are crucial in keeping your engine cool, your alternator running, and your air conditioning working. Routine inspection of these parts should be top priority for your Jeep Grand Cherokee. To keep your SUV running smoothly, ensure the timing belt, serpentine belt, radiator hoses, and other key parts are all in top shape.

Inspecting Your Jeep's Belts and Hoses

1. Pop the Hood and Locate Belts and Hoses

Open the hood and find the serpentine belt, radiator hoses, heater hoses, and any vacuum lines—these are your primary inspection targets.

2. Look for Visible Cracks or Fraying

Check belts for surface cracks, glazing, or frayed edges. For hoses, look for splits, swelling, or signs of leaking coolant around the clamps.

3. Feel for Soft or Brittle Spots

Gently squeeze hoses—if they feel overly soft, mushy, or brittle, it’s a sign they may fail under pressure.

4. Check Belt Tension

A loose belt may squeal or slip, especially under load. Make sure the belt has proper tension and doesn't deflect more than half an inch when pressed.

5. Inspect for Fluid Leaks or Residue

Look around hose connections and underneath your engine bay for dried coolant or oil stains, which might signal a slow leak or failing part.
